In Marina di Gioiosa Jonica, along the wide beaches of the lower Ionian Calabria, you will enjoy the exciting scuba dive experience from the shore accompanied by an expert instructor. The area is known as the “Seahorse Pit” because its sandy bottom is home to fascinating creatures like seahorses, both the species found in Italy: Hyppocampus hyppocampus and Hyppocampus guttulatus. The area is also inhabited by octopuses, intriguing owl fish, numerous mullets, camouflaged turbot, stingrays, and peacock wrasse. Depending on the season, you may encounter sea hares, small barracudas, or large sea lungs. The seabed is also animated by anemones, cerianthids, nudibranchs, and starfish. If you’re lucky, you might spot and photograph pelagic fish and eagle rays.
